Dalek – 1st season Doctor Who

The Daleks are one of the sworn enemies of the Doctor. They were actually the first foes that the Doctor encounters in the very first season.

All started here. I found this papermodel on internet (a very old one I suppose) and I started from scratch to have a base for the final Dalek.

Download it HERE

I wanted to create a Dalek as seen in the really first episode of Doctor who, when the Doctor and his companions arrived on planet Skaro.

So I printed it on A3 and started the long operation of gluing all together. However I wanted to add more details and I did so painting all with diluted wood glue and then inflating them with polyurethane to give them more stability.

I had some problems with the spherical surfaces of the head but I solved working on a deodorant stick cap and working on the part making it perfectly spherical (though I know that the Daleks do not have a spherical head).

After the upper cap it was the problem of how to finish the head. I used some gaskets for gas and wooden square sticks (that you can find in hobby shop) and finished the internal part with a mosquito net.

I moved to the other parts of the body, like the intermediate part. As usual I filled with polyurethane and added all the detail made with wooden parts handmade, painted in black and glued to the section. I added some gaskets as spacers too

Time to start with the main body. I filled as usual and I glued little half-spheres that I found in chinese shops (the coloured sticky stars, diamonds, gems that are super cheap and comes in sheets). I found the right dimension and I glued with epoxy glue.

I added the base and then I worked around a suitable stand, made of wood that I found in an expensive bricolage shop (they come in all shapes and dimensions). Painted it in Grey to be glued later on the main body and the lower section of the Dalek.

Now time for the little details for the arms, the periscope and the two lights on the head. I made them from scratch using wooden balls for the movable parts of the periscope and the arms and wooden squares that i grinded for the supports of the arms.

The “extermination” gun and the other arms that looks like an unclogger tool were made from pieces from pens, metallic wires, excavated plastic ball and little metallic tubes (all items that you can find in bricolage shops). The antennae were made with plastic transparent tubes, grinded in vertical and filled with transparent epoxy glue with a bit of blue acrylic paint.

Everything was painted black and later mounted on the single parts.

And finally the Dalek is all assembled.

A layer of black primer and after that a couple of finishing layers of steel paint.

Final retouches and after placing the two antennas the Dalek underwent some weathering with petrol oil and oil black paint.

Finally the Dalek can be glued on his stand and is completed.

I hope that you liked my little job of building a Dalek from scratch.

Well, frankly it depends of the level of expertise of the viewer. Probably you are advanced and don’t find useful information but others can find this interesting. However thanks for your comment.
